John Dennis

John Dennis
(1657-1734)

Critic and playwright, born in London, England. He studied at Cambridge, toured France and Italy, took his place among the men of fashion, and produced biting criticism to support the Whigs. He wrote nine plays, but had little success with them. Pope's Essay on Criticism (1711) contained a contemptuous allusion to one of his plays, which began a long feud.
