Rule 11 — Underlying Purpose Of Citizens: Pleasure versus Achievement
G.R. Taylor's Rules of Matrism/Patrism Explained

Patrists pursue Achievement
A dutiful man will suppress his own desires to pursue those aims described by duty, such as being a builder or soldier. And by suppressing his impulses he has a source of energy that can be directed into his tasks.

Matrists pursue Pleasure
The self-indulgent are dominated by their desires, which they attempt to sate at every opportunity. This pursuit of pleasure undermines any tangible achievement by dissipating their energies.
