Sources

The following is not a complete list of the works consulted, still less is it a bibliography to the entire subject. It is a list of works from which I have drawn specific facts or from which I have gained an understanding of a particular problem. Its purpose is to provide the reader with some opportunity of consulting the sources used. The edition given is normally the one consulted. Where this is English, the equivalent American edition (if any) is indicated in brackets. Literary works have been omitted; so have the works of the fathers of the Church, which can be found in Migne.
