The only intelligences capable of conscious manipulation of astral energies are the invisible inhabitants of the mysterious unseen world around us. Existing duodimensionally; that is, existing in both the third and fourth dimensions simultaneously, they can manifest themselves in any form which seems good to them. They do not invariably manifest in human form, however. Spirits come in all shapes and sizes, resembling the creations of imaginative fiction, and will persue the tasks asked of them by the practitioners of the occult arts. A favorite request of the occult fraternity is to be shown the site of treasures hidden by man and spirit, and the possession of same. A very famous conjuration for just such a request can be found in the Grimoire of Honorius, Rome, 1692.

The summoning of spirits is not restricted to the magical beliefs and workings of the West. It plays a major role in the secret rituals of West Indian voodoo. The person capable of discerning the secrets of Voodoo has to be able to give movement to the chosen few: the dead that walk; who, on the other hand, are faithful and efficient to their Voodoo Master. The magician with his supernatural powers, has to be someone authentically initiated. An initiate called the Minister; who, in order to obtain his wishes, has to call forth certain demonic agencies by means of a ritual. A black chicken is sacrificed at an exact astrological hour. These spirits then intercede for the Baron Samedi, the Voodoo god of the dead, so that the novice can achieve his goal. When all is propitious, the magician will enter the tomb of the person he wishes to enslave. He will use the human blood of a man if the body is that of a woman, and vice versa if it is that of a man. All this is done over a waxen image of the corpse. He then burns the waxen image while speaking the words that will summon the zombie into his presence. Zombies are afraid of fire and are destroyed when their master dies. For both these rituals the magician uses a medium for her docile spirituality to act as an intermediary for the demonic agencies.
