Verbal & Oral

Some authorities hold that "verbal means `couched in words', spoken or written as the case may be, and is not synonymous with oral, `delivered by word of mouth'". It would no doubt be convenient if this were so, for it would make for greater precision of language. But it is not: there is ample authority for the common use of verbal to distinguish the spoken word from the written.
