Note 004
by Joachim C. Fest

4 Hoss, Commandant of Auschwitz. See also Hannah Arendt, who comments in the same vein on Adolf Eichmann in Eichmann in Jerusalem(London and New York, 1963). Their life histories, basic psychological patterns, motivations, and ways of argumentation show a startling resemblance between Eichmann and Hoss. In general as in particular, nearly everything is interchangeable with this type - emphatic evidence for the drive toward standardisation inherent in totalitarian training.
