34 Papen, Memoirs. According to G. M. Gilbert, Nuremberg Diary, Papen expressed his astonishment at Nuremberg that 'the Allies had allowed Hitler for so long to lead them by the nose'. He also pleaded before the Tribunal the patriotic ideology of service: 'I have served not the Nazi regime but the Fatherland' (IMT, XXII).
