18 Kersten, Memoirs. See also Schellenberg, The Labyrinth. Dr Karl Gebhardt, a friend of Himmler's youth and head of Hohenlychen sanatorium, explained at the Nuremberg doctors' trial (Report S.3991):

'Himmler came from Landshut, the same town as myself . . . If my parents' house was an extraordinarily liberal, free, quiet one, then the Himmler house was that of a strong orthodox Catholic schoolmaster whose son was brought up very strictly and kept very short of money.'
