Note 039
by Joachim C. Fest

Gritzbach, Hermann Göring, records the mirror episode. An order of Hitler's was as a matter of fact responsible for the success of the British withdrawal; contrary to the counsel of the troop commanders, he kept Guderian's armoured divisions several miles south of Dunkirk to have them ready for the big final attack on France. But Hitler issued this command only after Goring had insisted that he could annihilate the British by means of the Luftwaffe alone; see B. H. Liddell Hart, The German Generals Talk (British title: The Other Side of the Hill); Bor, Gesprache mit Halder, Guderian, Panzer Leader.
