opus operans
by Erasmus

The sentence about the opus operans and the opus operatum was inserted in 1522, when Luther's attack on the theology of the sacraments, the Opus Operatum, had broken out. The distinction was made to emphasize that the validity of a sacramental rite (the opus opertatum) is independent of the religious disposition of the officiating minister (the opus operans or operantis).
