'Machiavelian politicians'

Niccolo Machiavelli (1469-1527) was secretary of the Republic of Florence, 1498-1512. In his great work, "The Prince", he asserts that to preserve the integrity of the state, a ruler should not feel himself bound by any scruples of justice or humanity.
